A Note from TopQuadrant’s CEO, Irene Polikoff

Knowledge graphs continued to be a hot topic at the recent Enterprise Data World 2019 conference in Boston, which was reflected in the strong interest in my well-attended talk Knowledge Graphs –A Strategic NoSQL Approach for Data Management and Governance. My presentation (download available here) explored what knowledge graphs are, what they are good for, and how they provide a “smart” approach to meaningfully bridging enterprise metadata silos and supporting integrated data governance.

Compared to previous years, there was considerably more attention at the conference on data governance–its challenges and effective approaches to address them. In particular, the topic of knowledge graphs dominated many of our conversations at the show, especially their use as a foundation for data governance, cognitive computing, and enterprise applications of AI / machine learning. Interestingly, the question we were most often asked was not about why an organization should use knowledge graphs but HOW they can create one. Apparently already convinced of their value for enterprise uses such as data governance, people just seemed to want to know how to get started working with them.

If you want to explore knowledge graphs further, and why they are so powerful in providing a central data governance framework, be sure to take a look at the recording, slides and Q&A (blog) from our recent webinar, “What are Knowledge Graphs? Why Are They Key to Successful Data Governance?”
