Policy Management
Policies include company internal policies and procedures as well as regulatory policies enforced by laws. In most organizations policies and procedures are either captured in documents or, sometimes, buried in the code of certain business applications.
When complex policies exists only as documents, they take a lot of effort to grasp. Enforcement of policies becomes an error prone and labor intensive process. Determining compliance ranges from difficult to nearly impossible.
When policies are embedded in the software code of the business applications, they become hidden from the business users. Changes are hard to make. Enforcing consistency of the policies across applications is a challenge,
Semantic Web technologies offer a better way of managing policies and enforcing compliance:
- Policies expressed in the industry-standard knowledge models can be directly queried and accessed by multiple applications
- Policies can be managed in a modular way by the respective business stakeholders and dynamically brought together on ‘as needed’ basis
- Compliance can be determined and enforced by reasoning over the knowledge models and generating alerts when the operational data from any of the data sources signifies out of compliance issues
- Knowledge about policies and procedure can be directly accessible to and managed by the business
